Product summary
Telecoms Market Matrix is a comprehensive source of trusted quarterly data
that sizes European fixed and mobile telecoms markets and provides market
shares for the major players. The metrics tracked offer insight into a range
of dynamics within and between fixed and mobile markets. All data provided is
directly comparable - we apply a common set of definitions to ensure
consistency between players and across markets. The full set of definitions
can be found here.
The data is delivered in a user-friendly Excel format, with filters that
enable you to select and compare data series. The data can easily be extracted
for your own use. Useful metrics derived from the data are also provided.
Methodology
All data provided is directly comparable - we apply a common set of
definitions to ensure consistency between players and across markets.
Reconciliation of different sources
Primary sources of market data are often contradictory. Where possible,
irregularities are removed through the application of standard definitions. It
is important to gain a coherent view of the market.
We reconcile different data sources by:
- performing bottom-up and top-down analysis of markets
- talking to operators and regulators about their methodologies
- making ad-hoc judgements based on experience of the market and knowledge
of the various sources.
Applying standard definitions
Common definitions must be applied in order to make meaningful comparisons
within and between markets. For example, we use quarterly figures for the
period in question, not rolling quarterly figures, and consistently apply a
standard definition of active subscribers (to derive metrics such as ARPU).
Where possible we use reported numbers in their ‘native' format. Often,
we have to reconcile different reporting methodologies with a combination
of:
- statistical methods
- benchmarking and estimation of the elements that account for differences
- tracking concurrent metrics and producing blended figures.
Filling in the gaps
In order to accurately size a market, all constituent parts need to be
included because omissions invalidate total market sizes and skew market
averages, and smaller players, such as MVNOs, can account for significant
customer bases. In cases where data is not publicly available, we use a number
of methods to ensure a comprehensive data set, including:
- application of seasonality and quarterly trends
- market intelligence
- estimates based on historical data, market movements and product launches
- benchmarking against peers.
