Sanjay Agarwal currently holds the position of Managing Director at KS Oils Limited, one of India's leading FMCG companies in edible oil. Mr. Agarwal joined KS Oils in July 2007 as its CEO. Because of his stellar performance and his ability to steer the company into key industry leadership position he was promoted as the Managing Director of the company in November 2007. Mr. Agarwal is also a Director in KS Natural Resources Pte.
His vision and ambition to create a global agri-commodity company from Asia is driving KS Oils’ international efforts. In the past 12 months, Mr. Agarwal and his team have made some key investments in South East Asia like setting up KS Oils’ base in Singapore and acquiring agri assets (palm plantations) in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Mr. Agarwal has a brilliant academic record too- a gold medallist he is a qualified chartered accountant (equivalent to CPA) and company secretary with a diploma is Information Systems audit. His main areas of expertise and interest are Business Strategy, M&As and Human Resource management.

Marriz Agbon has been one of the driving forces behind a number of agribusiness investment missions and agreements in and out of the Philippines. His concentration lies on biofuel production, and he has been involved in the industry for more than two years. He heads the Department of Agriculture-Department of Agrarian Reform and Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ joint project on the National Convergence Initiative. He is also the team leader of the Philippine Agribusiness Lands Investments Center, the Focal Person of Philippine Biofuels Feedstock Program, and the President of the Philippine Agricultural Development and Commercial Corporation.

Archie Amarra is currently the Executive Director of the Philippine Sugar Millers Association, Inc.
He was the Team Leader in the preparation of the Master Plan for the Sugar Industry. After months of research and consultations with the various players in the industry and government, the Plan was eventually published on June 2000.
The sugar industry, through the initiative of the private sector eventually adopted the Plan and started implementing it in 2002. The Sugar Master Plan Foundation, Inc. was put up by the Sugar Alliance and Mr. Amarra was asked to implement the Plan as Executive Director of the Foundation. He was also a Consultant for the Sugar Regulatory Administration, a government agency responsible for overseeing the Philippine sugar industry and formerly the Head of the Special Projects Group of the Confederation of Sugar Producers Associations, the biggest grouping of sugarcane farmers in the Philippines.
With the key role that he is playing in the Philippine sugar industry, Mr. Amarra is in the forefront of the initiative to promote the development of the industry in the Philippines.
Among his numerous consultancy undertakings, Mr. Amarra was also responsible for the preparation of Master Plans for ten other commodities which he undertook for the Philippine Department of Agriculture. These were: mango, cutflowers, bananas, durian, papaya, calamansi, swine, broiler, layer and tilapia.

Badrul Hisham Bin Mahari was was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of TDM Berhad on 1st July, 2008. He holds a a B.Sc. Degree in Chemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington, USA, and a MBA from Drake University, USA. He commenced his career as an officer in Kwong Yik Bank Berhad in 1984. He subsequently served as a Pruductivity Consultant in Alexander Proudfoot between 1986-1989. Between 1990 to 1998, he served in UEM Berhad in various capacities. His last position in the Group was as a Chief Operating Officer of one of its subsidiaries. Between 1999 -2004 he served as the Chief Executive Officer of one of subsidiaries at Multimedia Develoment Corporation. He joined TDM Berhad as the Group General Manager in 2004 and was subsequently promoted to the position of Chief Executive Officer in 2008.

Fabrizio Bresciani currently serves as Rural Development Economist in the World Bank's Philippine country office. His main areas of interest are agricultural and rural development, land reform, and land administration. Before joining the World Bank in 2007, he worked at the Agricultural Development Economics Division of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome (2001-2007) and in the World Bank’s Development Economics Research Group (1998-2001). He holds a PhD in Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a MSc in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics from the Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia.

Sumiter Broca works in the FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (Bangkok) as Policy Officer in the Policy Assistance Branch. His main job is to work with FAO member countries and the UN system to provide advice on food and agricultural policy and strengthen national policy making capacity in these areas.
He has been with FAO for over 9 years, most of it at the Organization’s headquarters in Rome where he was an Economist in the Global Perspectives Studies Unit of the Agricultural Development Economics Division.
Before joining FAO he was with the International Food Policy Research Institute Washington DC for 8 years and with the National Council of Applied Economic Research in New-Delhi for 2 ½ years.
He has a PhD in Economics from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland and an MBA from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium.

Leslie Cheong has been Director, Food Supply & Technology Department of Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of the Ministry of National Development, since July 2000. Leslie joined AVA in 1971 and has spent many years heading the aquaculture section. Leslie is also the Chief Fisheries Officer for AVA, the Alternate Council Director of SEAFDEC (South-East Asia Fisheries Development Center - a regional fisheries organisation comprising Japan and member states of ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations), and the Chairman of AARNET (ASEAN-Asian Vegetable Research & Development Center Regional Network on Vegetables Research & Development). Leslie holds a Bachelor Degree (Honours) in Zoology from the then University of Singapore (now National University of Singapore).

Prior to taking up his current position in CropLife Asia he lived in Guangzhou, PRC where he was managing director of FOCUS Consulting, which provided education and training services to a wide range of corporate clients and organizations across China. He is married to Sarah, who is Chinese and has an 8 years old daughter and a 2 years old son. Hobbies include scuba diving, cooking and playing poor golf.

Dr. Glick has been actively involved in agriculture research and development for over 30 years. He studied agronomy at McGill University in Montreal where he received a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He obtained his Masters degree in plant physiology at the University of Manitoba and received his Ph D at the University of Manitoba on a full scholarship in the area of plant physiology and biology. He has also completed an executive business management program at the University of Western Ontario.
After completing his formal education he joined the Canadian Wheat Board, an organization involved in international grain marketing. In 1985, after three years with the Wheat Board, he joined Monsanto as it was beginning to develop crop biotechnology programs.
Over the past 25 years at Monsanto, Harvey has lived and worked in Canada, Belgium and the US and currently is based in Singapore. He has held a variety of positions in the technology, commercial development and marketing organizations. He has been fortunate to visit and work in agricultural production systems in many different regions of the world with the objective of bringing new agricultural technology to producers. He helped introduce the first biotech crop in Canada, Roundup Ready canola, in 1995 and has been actively involved in the development of biotech crops for Europe, Asia and the Americas. Currently he is Senior Director of Scientific Affairs for Asia and is directly involved in bringing the next generation of plant biotechnology products to farmers around the world. He is a frequent speaker at conferences focused on agricultural biotechnology and sustainable food production systems. He is a board member on the Asia Food Information Council and the World Agricultural Forum Asia and is chairman of the Global Herbicide Resistance Committee. He is also active in CropLife Asia and the International Life Science Organization in South East Asia.

Tim Hornibrook has worked for Macquarie for the past 7 years and over the last 5 years has been focussed on agribusiness initiatives. Tim is a member of the management committee of Macquarie Agricultural Funds Management (MAFM). MAFM encompasses over 3.2m hectares of land purchased, developed and managed by Macquarie for agribusiness investments across sheep and cattle production, dairy, horticulture, viticulture, forestry, grains and oilseeds.
Tim has been one of the team responsible for the formulation of the Macquarie Pastoral Fund (MPF) and is Director of Macquarie Pastoral Services. MPF is the first fund of its kind globally; investing in Australian sheep and cattle production in order to leverage increasing protein consumption globally and Australia’s comparative production advantages.
Tim has been involved in the analysis of a range of range of agriculture commodities globally in order to understand their risk/return characteristics and their potential attractiveness from institutional investment viewpoint. Rodney Lake is a Senior Investment Analyst in George Washington University’s (GW) Investment Office. Under the direction of the Chief Investment Officer, the office is responsible for managing the University’s $1.0 billion endowment fund. Mr. Lake’s responsibilities include developing investment themes, as well as identifying and recommending implementation strategies including the use of derivatives across all asset classes. Jen-chyuan Lee is the Director of the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region. Previous to this role, he has worked with the Council of Agriculture in the Executive Yuan as senior specialist, Director of the Fisheries Department, Secretary General, and finally as its Deputy Minister.
He took his PhD in the Deparment of Fisheries and Allied Aquaculture in Auburn University in Alabama, USA and his MS in the Graduate School of Zoology in the National Taiwan University.

John Lovett is foundation Chairman of the Board of the Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity Ltd, Chairman of the Board of Agrifood Awareness Australia Ltd, and former Chairman of the Board of the Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Accounting. He is the nominee of AusBiotech Ltd to the Australian Capital Territory Gene Technology Advisory Committee.
In 1990 John Lovett was appointed to the foundation Board of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), becoming Managing Director in 1994 and serving in that capacity until December 2003. During this exciting period for the Australian grains industry the GRDC’s investments in grains R&D nationally, and overseas, increased from some $A30 million to $A125 million.
Since leaving the Corporation, John has assisted a number of industries with various aspects of strategy and planning – grains, meat and wool in Australia, and dairy in New Zealand and has recently assisted Land and Water Australia ion developing a National Climate Change Strategy for Primary Industries.
In 2006 he was appointed to the Executive Board of the Global Crop Diversity Trust, established to protect the world’s crop genetic resources in perpetuity. The opening of the so-called ‘Doomsday Vault’ in Svalbard (February 2008) captured world-wide attention for this very important endeavour, in which Australia is proud to have played a key role.
In June 2008, under the auspices of The Crawford Fund and with the assistance of CABI (SEAsia) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industries, Malaysia, John and other members of the Cooperative Research Centre for National Plant Biosecurity offered an International Master Class in Plant Biosecurity to 17 participants from 10 countries, in Kuala Lumpur.

As co-founder and Executive Director of Prosperity Initiative, John is a Board Member and heads the Executive Team. His experience includes more than 20 years spanning the public, private and, more recently, the development sectors. John came to Viet Nam in 2005 as Oxfam Hong Kong's Country Representative for Lao PDR and Viet Nam. In that role, he partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to develop and lead the Oxfam-IFC bamboo collaboration that would eventually become Prosperity Initiative's Mekong Bamboo programme.
John has worked in 16 countries as an independent consultant, Country Director for NGOs, agricultural/environmental engineer and market specialist. John holds a PhD in Natural Resource Planning, as well as M.S. degrees in Development Economics and Environmental Management and a B.A. in Engineering.

Hemendra Mathur is working with SEAF India Investment Advisors as Managing Director. SEAF is in the process of launching USD 75 mn fund focused on investments in SMEs in food supply chain in India. Hemendra has over thirteen years of experience in private equity, investment banking and management consulting. Hemendra has in-depth knowledge of consumer behaviour, retail environment, supply chain and policy issues in food and agribusiness sector. He has worked closely with companies, government, policymakers and academia pertaining to sectors such as food, agribusiness, consumer goods and retail.
He has earlier worked with Yes Bank, Rabo India Finance (100% subsidiary of Rabobank International), KSA Technopak (now Technopak) and ORG MARG (now part of AC Nielsen).
Hemendra has played an important role in catalyzing reforms in agriculture and food processing sector by closely working with the government. He has been a member of committees constituted by the Planning Commission (Government of India), on issues related to food processing and agricultural reforms. He has addressed various conferences focused on the food and agribusiness sector and has authored articles in leading business dailies in India. He has developed innovative business models for the industry such as market mapping tools, consumer behavior tracking, retail roll-out, rural business hubs and sourcing & supply chain management.
Hemendra studied Management at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Agricultural) from Rajasthan Agricultural University.

Dr. Samarendu Mohanty is the Head of the Social Sciences Division, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) based in Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines. His specialization is on Commodity Modeling, Trade and Policy Analysis, and Futures Markets. He is involved at IRRI’s Medium Term Plan under Program 1 Productivity in Rainfed Environments, Program 2 Intensive Rice-Based Systems and Program 7 Policy Support and Impact Assessment.
Dr. Mohanty received his PhD in August 1995, MS in August 1992 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and BS in December 1989 in the University of Agricultural Sciences, India. He began his career in 1990 to 1994 as Research Assistant in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
On research funding, he was a principal investigator in 17 research projects where he got significant funding sources. His research experience is on econometric modeling where the final baseline projections are presented to the US Senate and House staff members, commodity analysts at Economic Research Service and World Agricultural Outlook Board, commodity groups and media groups. He had authored and co-authored 59 Journal/Technical Publications, 8 book chapters, 17 proceedings, 8 Magazine articles, and 50 presentations.

Ronnie is presently the Chairman, Department of Social Economics of Agriculture and Agribusiness in Padjadjaran University. He is also the Director of the Center for Agricultural Policy and Agribusiness Studies in Padjadjaran University, where he is tasked to coordinate research projects related to food policy, food security, and food market restructuring in Indonesia and Asia Pacific region. He has sucessfully secured continuous funding from numerous local and international agencies including the Ministry of Agriculture, West Java Province, World Bank and DFID on links between food market restructuring and small vegetable farmers in West Java, USAID, ACIAR, and AUSAID (2008-2012).
He was awarded the Fulbright Senior Research Scholarship in 2006 where he conducted a research entitled A Comparative Study on the Growth of Supermarket in Developing Countrys; the Agricultural Development Perspective in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Reardon and Dr. Peter Timmer.
He is presently also the Chairman of Research and Development in the National Horticulture Board and secretary general of the National Agricultural Research Network

Asian Farmers Association For Sustainable and Rural Development
Ms. Ma. Estrella Penunia, or Esther, as called by colleagues, is Secretary General of the Asian Farmers’ Association or AFA, a regional alliance of national farmers organizations or FOs in Asia. Established in 2002, AFA is currently composed of nine FOs in eight countries, representing around 10 million small scale men and women farmers. AFA carries out programs on policy advocacy, capacity building, management of on-ground initiatives and governance. It conducts activities related to policy information, analyses and campaigns as well as dialogues with decision makers, both at national and regional levels. It provides technical and managerial support to members’ initiatives on farmers’ organizing and empowerment, organizational development and management , agrarian reform, sustainable agriculture, equity led marketing and trading. It likewise develops projects along these areas that are implemented in selected countries.
As a social development worker, Esther spent all her professional years in the field of rural development, working with the farmers’, fishers and IP sectors in various capacities as community organizer, participatory action researcher, trainer, gender advocate, program/project manager, executive, consultant, and campaigns coordinator.

Datuk Dr. Abd. Shukor Abd. Rahman has been with MARDI since 1978. He finished his B.Agr.Sc in University of Agriculture Malaysia in 1978, and then he went onto University of Florida to finish his MSc in 1983 and his PhD in 1993. Before becoming the MARDI’s Director General, he has worked largely with the Horticulture Research Center and then went on to become the Deputy Director General of Research. He has published more than 20 papers in referred local and international journals.

Sununtar Setboonsarng, a national of Thailand, is Senior Agriculture Economist at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). She has extensive field experience in sustainable agriculture and rural development activities, including the development of microfinance project in a number of countries including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Viet Nam, China, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka.
In her current post, her responsibilities include project implementation, project design, and carrying out policy-oriented research on agriculture and natural resource management, including climate change. She leads the activities of the ADB Working Group for Agriculture in Greater Mekong Subregion. She is also active in international networking with staff of other organizations involved in sustainable agriculture and climate change operations.
Ms. Setboonsarng plays a key role in generating and disseminating knowledge on sustainable agriculture within and outside ADB. She has written and published on various aspects of poverty reduction (organic agriculture and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), agriculture and climate change, private sector development, and poverty reduction (cross-border contract farming), IT and food traceability system (food-safety), rural and microfinance, and regional cooperation. She is a well-known speaker in international organic agriculture forums.

Dr. Abusaleh Shariff is an economist and demographer, currently Senior Research Fellow at the New Delhi Office of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). His research focus at IFPRI is in the areas of labor markets, income diversity and social safety nets with a special focus on rural and agrarian communities in Asia. Before joining IFPRI in March 2008, he was chief economist and head of the human development division of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi where he worked for total of 13 years. He has over 30 years of consistent record of academic research in the field of development economics, rural development, human development, poverty studies, demography and health economics, labor and social security, social sector budgetary analysis and micro-impact of economic reforms. He has undertaken a number of large scale evaluatory representative sample surveys in India. He was a recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation International Family Fellowship to undertake research Economic Growth Centre of Yale University, USA during 1991-2. He has secured a Ph.D (1986) in Demography from Australian National University, Canberra, Australia; and a M.A in Economics from Bangalore University, India.

David has been involved in rural and regional development to enhance the use of innovation and technology in a number of key Australian and Asian industries including wine, horticulture and high value niche products. He has played a significant role in developing Australia’s food and agricultural export performance in a number of roles with the State Government of Victoria, Australia which saw exports of food and agricultural being sustained at around $7 billion. His international development has focussed in South East Asia, with activities to develop more competitive smallholder based value chains and enabling access to higher value markets. This works has involved a diversity of product types including cocoa, coffee, seaweed, tropical and temperate fruits, temperate vegetables, maize, beef, goats, pigs, lobster, mariculture products and cashews.
David has a Masters from Monash University’s Graduate School of Business and a Masters in plant physiology. His undergraduate degree was completed at the University of Sydney where he received the Theresa McKenzie Award and Arthur Yates Memorial Prize for excellence in horticulture. He has published in international journals, industry journals and for government agencies and presented at international, national and local conferences and workshops.

Dr. Tan is currently Executive Director of CropLife Asia, the Asian operation of an international trade association with a presence in 91 countries. At CropLife Asia, he is responsible for directing regulatory, crop protection, biotechnology and outreach programmes in 15 Asian countries.
Other professional experience includes set-up the University of Putra Malaysia’s (UPM) Genome Centre, and management of 2 start-up ventures developing Bioinformatics Software and Pre-natal Genetic Testing. Additionally, at Sime Darby he was responsible for: setting-up the biotechnology Section for the Sime Darby Technology Centre (genetic testing for Leukaemia and pre-post bone marrow transplanting monitoring for the Subang Jaya Medical Centre), for project managing the Northern Corridor Economic Region Project (NCER) on large scale farming, and for developing an agri- entrepreneur program.
Dr. Tan holds a B.Sc. in Plant Pathology from the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, a M.Sc in Genetic Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology (Plant Virus) from Okayama University in Japan. Professional recognition includes a Silver Award at the 2005 Geneva Intl Exhibitions & Inventions of New Techniques and Products, a US Government Cochran Fellowship for biological research at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, and UPM awards for Research & Development.

Joseph was appointed Executive Director of IJM Plantations Berhad on 19 October 2008. He joined IJMP in 2004 to head the research, training and development activities of the Group. H-W baron van Tuyll van Serooskerken was born in Holland in 1938. He spent his early youth with his parents in Indonesia and the USA. Schooling in Holland and after finishing same and two years of compulsory military service, joined a major Dutch Shipping Company and was posted from 1961-'65 to Durban and Johannesburg, South Africa and 1965-'69 to headquarters in Hong Kong.
He joined the Cargill Inc group of companies in 1969 in Geneva, Switzerland. After various positions in Holland (training), Brazil (grain trader, 1970), Belgium (building and operating a Holiday Inn franchise motel, 1971-‘74), New York (metal trader for Cargill subsidiary C.Tennant Sons, 1974 ) and Tokyo (responsible for Tennant’s Asian operations, 1974-’79), returned to Geneva in '79 to concentrate on non grain related acquisitions. Joined the brokerage company of the group (CIS) in 1984 as futures broker, but concentrated, since 1989, on Hedge Funds and their developments.
He retired from the Cargill group, upon reaching the compulsory retirement age, in 2003. Remained an advisor to CIS for the next years, until the brokerage business was sold in late 2005.
He was elected in 1992 to the Board of the Cargill International Pension Board and retired from this position in 2003.
Since retirement joined a wide variety of Boards as non executive director or similar functions in financial and shipping industries.
