xchange magazine joined Trendsmedia to present the first annual Mobile Internet Innovation Awards at Mobile Internet World, Nov. 13-15, 2007, in Boston at the Hynes Convention Center.
The Mobile Internet Innovation Awards recognize the leaders in the development and deployment of mobile Internet technology. With the rapid growth of mobile Internet, it is fitting that companies be given the opportunity to showcase and be lauded for their groundbreaking accomplishments in this expanding field.
The winners were:
- Most Innovative Enterprise Application: Wapple.net Wapple Canvas
- Most Innovative Enterprise Deployment: Tropos Networks Inc. ER-Link Deployment in Tucson, Ariz.
- Most Innovative Consumer Application: Sling Media Inc. SlingPlayer Mobile
- Most Innovative Consumer Deployment: Opera Software Opera Mini
The runners-up were:
- Most Innovative Enterprise Application: SMobile Systems Security Shield
- Most Innovative Enterprise Deployment: TeleNav Deployment of TeleNav Track with Swedish Medical Center
- Most Innovative Consumer Application: PixSense PSP Platform and SpinVoxfs Social Networks through SpinVox
- Most Innovative Consumer Deployment: Nokia Widsets
Winners receive personalized trophies as well as electronic logo files for use in their marketing and advertising.
Nominations
Nominations are open to all providers and vendors of mobile Internet technology and applications. Nominations must be submitted via a Web form by the deadline date. Only one nomination per form will be accepted. Incomplete applications will not be judged and will result in disqualification.
Judging
Final selection of winners will be made by the Mobile Internet Innovation Awards Selection Committee, which includes subject matter experts from the mobile Internet community.
Submissions will be rated on criteria outlined for each category by the selection committee.
Honorable mentions will be awarded at the discretion of the committee.
Selection Committee
The Selection Committee will include representatives from xchange and Trendsmedia, and invited subject matter experts.
Judging Criteria
The Consumer Application Award is designed to recognize software developers for innovation in consumer mobile Internet applications that are published and available for market deployment, but not necessarily deployed.
- Usability (40%) - How intuitive is the user interface?
- Openness (20%) - Does this interact easily with a range of other applications and devices? Or are consumers locked into a single method of use?
- Convenience (40%) - Consumers want to do four things: Get stuff done, stay in touch, have fun, and buy stuff. Does this application help consumers do something they already want to do in an easier, more convenient way than other methods? How does this help consumers to do what they want, how they want to do it?
The Consumer Deployment Award is designed to recognize service providers and/or software developers for a successful deployment of an innovative mobile Internet application in a commercial environment with consumer subscribers.
- Price (10%) - Is this a mass-market application? Or are many people priced out of buying it?
- Upgradeability (20%) - What is the future of this technology? Are upgrades free and painless? Or is the purchase of an entirely new package necessary? Does application-specific data (content, stats, etc.) transfer easily to an upgraded package?
- Usability (30%) - How intuitive is the user interface? Do consumers just get it?
- Consumer Uptake (40%) - Are people really using this?
The Enterprise Application Award is designed to recognize software developers for innovation in enterprise mobile Internet applications that are published and available for market deployment, but not necessarily deployed.
- Usability (30%) - How intuitive is the user interface?
- Multiclient Support (20%) - How many ways can this be delivered? Fat client, thin client, as a service, etc.
- Openness (25%) - How easily does this interact with other important applications?
- Productivity Impact (10%) - Provide a use-case example, to prove that this is important to businesses
- Strength of Partnerships (15%) - How strong are the partnerships that are helping the cause of this technology?
The Enterprise Deployment Award is designed to recognize service providers and/or software developers for a successful deployment of an innovative mobile Internet application in a commercial environment with enterprise subscribers.
- Migration Path (20%) - Where is this technology going in the future? How will upgrades be managed?
- Price (20%) - How does it compare to similar applications? How long until break-even point?
- Strength of Customer Base (20%) - This is not necessarily the number of customers, but rather the strength. Are there major deployments? Does this technology have major companies recommending it?
- Ease of Implementation (15%) - How easy is this to install/set up?
- Manageability (25%) - How intuitive is the management interface? How much time must be dedicated to ensuring the application runs smoothly?
