Africa segment: International trade and the exchange of ideas are essential to a country's success. Therefore the cost of international bandwidth poses a significant barrier to the ability of African countries to participate in world trade and to increase their capacity and skills. Without cheaper international bandwidth Africa runs the danger of being left behind in the global race. Africa has also amongst the highest bandwidth costs in the world and a pressing need for greater connectivity. This segment explores one of the earliest African submarine cable project backed by the World Bank and government initiatives.

Caribbean segment: In recent years, there has been renewed interest for submarine capacity within the Caribbean and a lack of capacity specifically designed to handle intra-regional traffic. The extent that capacity upgrades are occurring on the major submarine fiber optic trunk routes, new branches are being added to existing systems, and new construction projects are being discussed. In this segment, we explore one of the newest short haul cable project in the Caribbean.

Seahorse-1, which will be the first high-speed broadband service linking the United States and Puerto Rico without hops, it is a 4850 km ring comprised of 4 fiber pairs between Miami, Florida, Cacique, Dominican Republic, Isla Verde, Puerto Rico. Seahorse-1 is also the first submarine cable system to utilize a renewable energy power plant. |

A new 9,000 kilometre submarine cable that will dramatically increase internet capacity between Australia and the United States and can be scaled up to 1.28 Terabits* per second capacity between the two countries. At full capacity of 1.28 Terabits per second, the cable is capable of carrying 160,000 concurrent high definition television channels. |

HAWK is a multi terabit, next generation DWDM submarine cable connecting India to Cyprus. The project is expected to be completed by 2009 and will have a significant impact on the Cyprus telecommunications sector and the Cyprus economy as well, given that it will help Cyprus to establish itself as a country for new emerging services facilitated by the increased international capacity, alternative routing and lower prices. |
