Abstract
The underlying trend in chicken meat consumption is still upwards, and at
least 50% growth is expected over the next two decades. In 2008, however,
global production is being constrained by soaring feed and other input costs,
as well as by the continuing disruption of avian influenza and other factors
such as extreme weather conditions.
Lower production last year resulted in an unexpected turnaround in the
fortunes of almost all the major poultrymeat producing regions, but input
costs are rising so rapidly that profitability is once again being seriously
eroded. Some countries, including Russia and Brazil, continue to invest
heavily in the sector, while others are battling with the new financial
outlook.
Huge shifts in the market have seen the industry emerging stronger and leaner,
but with major risks to face in the coming years. Nowhere is the pressure
being felt more keenly than in Europe, where producers are still contending
with increasing volumes of cheap imports, despite the new quota system imposed
on Brazil and Thailand, and are struggling to maintain, let alone raise, their
prices. Worldwide, further consolidation is expected. Feed costs will continue
to rise, and in an increasingly global marketplace there are regulatory issues
to be faced.
First published in 2003, World Poultrymeat gives you specialist coverage of
all of these developments as well as analysis of the poultrymeat markets and
the political and regulatory developments affecting the industry. Our network
of correspondents, based in the main poultrymeat regions, ensure World
Poultrymeat is packed with the latest industry information.
