Upper Lake, CA (USA) – July 16, 2008 -- ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market & technology forecast consultancy, today announced the release of a new market forecast of the global market consumption of packaged High Brightness Light Emitting Diodes (HB-LEDs) used in selected applications. The forecast provides the historic year of 2007 and a 5-year (2008-2012) forecast of the consumption value segmented into geographic regions and segmented by the following colors: Red-Green-Blue (RGB) multiple chip bulb package; Red-Orange-Yellow; Blue-Green; White (WLED).

RGB Multichip Remain Market Share Leader
The use of White HB-LEDs is forecasted to multiply by a factor of 6-times, increasing at an average annual rate of 45.3 percent (2007-1012). "The use of RGB multiple-chip HB-LEDs will remain heavy; however, White LEDs are taking market share from the RGB multichip segment," said Stephen Montgomery, president of ElectroniCast Consultants - APAC and the director of the LED project group.

HB-LED signal market segment
The worldwide consumption value of HB-LEDs used in signals, most notably referring to traffic signals, pedestrian signal/controls, is forecasted with a dramatic average annual growth rate of 49.5 percent (2007-2012). "The HB-LED signal market segment is a retrofitting application; therefore a major dynamic (market driver) will remain throughout the five-year forecast period of this study. Additionally, incentives based on "Going-Green" initiatives are materializing further promotion of retrofitting projects. Other dynamics include safety of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, since the LEDs are a proven and reliable technology. LEDs are a good choice in this sector, because as in all applications, the low-energy consumption models drive the LED markets, Montgomery said.

The global consumption value of HB-LEDs in 2007 was $4.48 billion. The consumption value is forecasted to increase to $9.075 billion in 2012
