Abstract
THIS REPORT:
- Provides a synopsis of the worldwide market for energy efficiency
technologies
- Contains global market forecasts through 2014 for distributed energy
generation technologies
- Describes the importance of energy efficiency in meeting global climate
change goals and optimizing energy use
- Discusses important manufacturers and factors influencing demand
- Reviews exceptional emerging technologies likely to be viable by 2014.
STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
BCC' s goal in conducting this study was to assess and describe the current
status of the worldwide energy efficiency (EE) industry for all major
technologies, and assess the potential growth of that industry. Specifically,
the study' s objectives were to: (1) summarize existing EE technologies and
promising emerging technologies that are under development; (2) evaluate the
existing EE industry, focused on producers of each major viable technology;
and (3) assess market potential for EE technologies over a 5-year period, from
2009 through 2014.
SCOPE OF REPORT
The scope of this investigation includes only major viable EE technologies for
the commercial, residential, and industrial sectors, as well as an abbreviated
discussion of potentially viable and emerging EE technologies. BCC analyzes
each technology, determines its current market status, examines its impact on
future markets, and presents forecasts of growth over the next 5 years.
Technological issues, including the latest trends, are assessed and discussed,
as are the current and potential regulatory environments in support of this
industry.
BCC analyzes the industry on a worldwide basis, from both manufacturing and
implementation phases points of view. Government roles are examined that
support energy-efficient technologies worldwide, including regulatory support
and requirements, feed in tariffs, and promotional incentives for various EE
technologies. A review of the most relevant EE technologies is provided,
recent trends in capacity installation and unit sales are discussed, and
industry overviews and market assessments for each EE technology are presented.
WORLDWIDE MARKETS
The following list provides a review of the major worldwide markets that were
assessed in support of this study:
- North America - United States, Canada
- Europe - European Union
- Asia and Australia - China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, Pacific Rim
INFORMATION SOURCES
Background information, including reviews of each EE technology and its
implementation status, were collected from government and industry sources,
primarily those located in the United States and Europe. Specific citations
and references are provided as needed to support this study, and website links
to government and industry studies, white papers, and other relevant
information are provided whenever available.
BCC' s research of present and historic market trends was conducted primarily
via phone interviews and Internet research, typically relying on personal
interviews and internal company data that were provided to BCC Research, and
on annual documentation of sales within each sector as relevant to a
particular EE technology. Based on the results of our surveys, the potential
applications for each technology were analyzed, and sales forecasts were made
for the 2009 through 2014 time frame.
Market sizes and installed capacity figures were calculated based upon data
obtained from surveyed parties. When available, data regarding the total
percentage of market share that was represented by the surveyed parties was
used to provide an estimate of the entire market size and/or installed
capacity. Additionally, when available, the data provided in this report were
compared with other industry data to ensure relevance, applicability, and
accuracy. Data are summarized in the list below as follows - portion of
report/ information source/ primary or secondary source.
- Review of energy-efficient technologies and energy-efficient products/
Scientific, government, and industry research/Secondary
- Regulatory support for energy efficiency/Government documents/Primary and
secondary
- Industry structure and market overview/Industry interviews/Primary
- Major companies and company profiles/Industry interviews,/Primary
- Market assessment and projections/Industry interviews/BCC Research
calculations/Primary
- Both primary and secondary research methods were used in preparing this
report. BCC surveyed more than 110 companies to obtain the data for this
study. Included were manufactures of EE hardware, hardware distributors, and
selected industrial products. We also spoke with users of these technologies
in a variety of locales worldwide. Additionally, data were compiled from
current financial and trade information and government sources.
