REPORT HIGHLIGHTS

  • The total 2003 North American market for ceramic/inorganic additives for nonceramic applications and ceramic processing/adhesives/decorative coatings was $3.5 billion in 2003.
  • The market is expected to rise at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 1.4%, to $3.7 billion by 2008.
  • The global market for 2003 was estimated at $10.5 billion. This is expected to grow at an AAGR of 2% to $11.6 billion in 2008.
  • Titania is the most widely used additive, and is found in both ceramic and nonceramic applications.

INTRODUCTION

Ceramic materials play a role in many applications either as a major raw material or as an additive. Both ceramic oxides and nonoxides have applications as processing or performance aids in ceramic processing. Some oxides also are used as pigments or fillers in other materials like plastics.

An emerging application is use as a filler in polymers found in electronic components to boost thermal conductivity as electronic packaging gets smaller. Another fairly recent application is use as a filler for wear layers in laminate flooring.

Ceramic adhesives provide unique advantages for certain applications due to their high-temperature resistance. A variety of industries take advantage of their properties. Consumer applications provide the major end uses for decorative coatings and glazes. Despite the traditional nature of some of these industries and their applications, research continues to improve the materials and related processes.

This BCC report provides an analysis of inorganic additives used in ceramic processing. They are based on oxides and other materials. Also covered are ceramic additives used in other materials like metals and plastics and as adhesives and decorative coatings/glazes. North American markets are closely examined and an overview of global markets is provided.

SCOPE OF STUDY

The report contains:

  • Technical and ceramic industry overviews
  • Current and emerging ceramic production methods
  • New developments in materials and processing techniques
  • Business and technology issues
  • Current and emerging applications
  • An extensive North American industry and market analysis with market forecasts through 2008.

METHODOLOGY AND INFORMATION SOURCES

Information for this report was collected by contacting persons active in the development, production and use of ceramic additives, adhesives, and decorative coatings/glazes, including government and academic sources active in research and development, and by reference to technical literature. Key companies were interviewed by telephone or Email.

Secondary data were obtained from trade publications and journals such as the American Ceramic Society Bulletin and Journal, Ceramic Industry, and others. Government statistics from the Department of Commerce (Bureau of Census) were also used, as well as other market data and information from various web sites.

Company profiles of the major producers and users are provided in Appendix I. Overseas companies also are identified for each market segment. In addition, a list of recent patents is included in the appendices, as well as contact information for other overseas research organizations.
