Abstract
For many decades, gas metering and gas sensors/monitors for different applications have used
various mechanical measurement techniques. These were developed and perfected to combine high
accuracy, long service life and low cost.
This BCC study of gas metering and gas sensors/monitoring presents the results of a worldwide survey
of gas flowmeter and gas sensor users. The report gives a critical view of the markets including
demand scenarios for different applications. It assesses the role of gas metering as a material
balance tool and gas sensors/monitors in detection and control. As such, these are key participants
in almost all major markets that include custody transfer of natural gas and account for more than
60% of the global gross domestic product (GDP). The study quantifies demand for gas meters and
sensors/monitors by category, product type, application and technology, and assesses the
relationships between major consumers and producers.
Focus also is placed on the key challenges to current developments and long-term strategies for
developing international standards and their impact on the global economy; the various technologies
of gas metering and gas sensing/monitoring, including the critical stages of deployment and how they
