Abstract
INTRODUCTION
First popularized in the late 1990s, MF systems gained rapid acceptance for drinking water treatment following waterborne disease outbreaks in the U.S. and Canada. Because membrane filtration is essential to removing pathogenic microorganisms, as mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, it is expected that conventional drinking water treatment will eventually be completely replaced by membrane systems. Worldwide, potable water treatment remains the largest aqueous separation for MF.
For many applications, MF membrane costs have dropped more than 80% since the 1990s as a result of increased competition, better system design, and lower manufacturing costs. MF operating costs have decreased because of improvements in materials and modules, such as chlorine resistance, greater surface area, higher permeability, and longer membrane lifetimes. As a result, several typical applications have emerged for MF technology: drinking water treatment, filtration of various wastewaters for reuse, RO pretreatment, microbial stabilization of wine and beer, biotech research and bioprocessing, and chemical and water filtration in semiconductor fabrication.
This BCC Research market opportunity report provides an in-depth analysis of the technical and market drivers relating to the market for microfiltration (MF) membranes, evaluating the current worth of MF membranes by application, and forecasting growth and trends in the various sectors over the next five years. The conclusions are illustrated with important statistical information on markets, applications, industry structure, and dynamics, along with technological developments.
This comprehensive analysis provides specific, detailed information crucial to making educated decisions. It is an important source of information on the industry, a reference manual on an advanced technology and a resource that provides information to decision-makers who need to stay abreast of the state of the art.
