Abstract
INTRODUCTION
STUDY GOAL AND OBJECT
China is facing severe environmental problems stemming from its overuse of
natural resources, dense population, rapid industrial growth, heavy reliance
on coal, outdated technology, under-priced water and energy, and insufficient
infrastructure. According to the World Bank, China had 20 of the world' s 30
most polluted cities in 2004. However, the central government of China has
been making the environment issue more and more of a priority. As part of the
11th Five Year Plan, the government believes an estimated $225 billion, or
1.5% of projected GDP over the period, will be spent on environmental
protection.
This BCC report provides an in-depth analysis of China' s environmental
protection and control industry including water, air and land pollution
control (MSW). It covers industry background and structure, policy and
regulation, technology and equipment/products, industry leaders, end users,
international cooperation, etc. Market forecasts are presented for the period
from 2008 through 2013.
REASONS FOR DOIONG THE STUDY
Despite the high growth rate, however, China' s environmental protection
industry is still at a comparatively low level, with a weak foundation,
inadequate innovation, as well as low marketization. Incomplete structure is
yet another feature of the industry with environmental consulting, trade, and
financial services still at the preliminary stage. The government encourages
foreign players to enter this industry, elevating their technology, management
levels, and enriching their financing channels.
This BCC report is intended to reveal business opportunities and technology
development trends in China' s environmental protection and control industry.
INTENDED AUDIENCE
This report is of interest to environmental protection equipment/products
producers, environmental consulting companies, traders, financial services
providers and industry researchers. China is a huge potential market for
competitors or partners. It has the potential to be a large consumer and a
business hub in the global environmental protection marketplace, as well as a
provider of opportunities for research, due to its relevantly low R&D level.
SCOPE OF THE REPORT
The environmental protection and control industry can be divided into the
following sectors:
- Products and equipment manufacturing
- Service and waste recycling utilization
- Ecosystem protection
- Nonhazardous products manufacturing.
According to the products/equipment application, this sector can be divided
into water pollution control, air pollution control, land pollution (municipal
solid waste or MSW) control, noise and vibration control, and the environment
monitoring industry.
This BCC report focuses on the following product/equipment manufacturing
industries:
- Water pollution control
- o Industrial wastewater treatment
- o Urban wastewater treatment
- Air pollution control
- o Desulfurization (SO2 and NOx capture)
- o Dust control
- o Vehicle emission control
- Land pollution control
- o Municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment.
INFORMATION SOURCES
The material presented is based on extensive reviews of secondary sources such
as technical papers, industry conferences, trade publications, industry
associations, company literature, and government on-line data.
Our final analyses and projections are based on a combination of a consensus
among the secondary sources combined with our understanding of the impact of
trends from a historical perspective. All dollar data presented in this report
are based on the exchange rate of $1 = RMB 6.8 (Yuan).
