Abstract
The major development within Kuwait' s maritime sector over the last quarter
was the delivery of nine Liebherr mobile harbour cranes at the ports of
Shuaiba and Shuwaikh. The cranes which consist of six LHM400 models and
three LHM 500 models were delivered to the Al Ghanim & Al Majid Logistics
Group (AGAM) and will be put into operation at the company' s container
handling operations. BMI notes that the cranes will allow an increase in
productivity at the ports and will allow the facilities to handle more
containers. The current downturn however will mean that extra container
volumes are unlikely at both of the Kuwaiti ports in 2009, with BMI
predicting container throughput at the ports of Shuaiba and Shuwaikh to
fall by 1.1% and 2.4% respectively in 2009. We also forecast declines in
both ports total throughput with tonnage decreasing by 1.7% at the port of
Shuaiba and 2.1% at the port of Shuwaikh. This decline in trade at the
country' s ports is based on BMI' s Country Risk assumption that total trade
volumes will decline by 1.2% in 2009, with imports set to increase by 2% and
exports set to fall by 3.5% As well as an in-depth analysis of Kuwait' s
shipping sector the Q309 Kuwait Shipping Report also offers a global
overview of the dry bulk, liquid bulk and container sectors and overviews of
the 11 largest shipping lines and their strategies over the quarter to
weather the downturn in trade volumes.
