Abstract
Chile’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as
including computing devices, mobile handsets, and video audio and gaming
products, is projected at around US$2.1bn in 2009. Growth slowed from Q409
as the economy felt the impact of the global economic crisis, with private
consumption dropping significantly. Despite signs of a continued
decline in retail demand in H109, the market is expected to grow a CAGR of
6.1% to US$2.7bn by 2013, driven by demand for LCD TV sets, notebook
computers, digital cameras and other key products, and by rising incomes
and greater credit availability.
Computers
Computer hardware accounted for around 47% of Chile’s consumer electronics spending in 2008,
with PC penetration still below 20%. BMI forecasts Chile’s
domestic market computer sales (including notebooks and accessories)
of US$819mn in 2009, up from US$775mn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR
for the 2008-2013 period is forecast at about 8%, driven by sales of
notebooks and netbooks.
AV Devices
AV devices accounted for around 43% of Chile’s consumer electronics spending in 2008.
Chile’s domestic AV device market was estimated at US$890mn.
Although growth will be relatively flat in 2009 and 2010, sales of digital
TV sets and cameras are projected to drive AV spending to increase at
a CAGR of 3.2% between 2009 and 2013.
Mobile Handsets
Mobile handset sales accounted for around 10% of Chile’s consumer
electronics spending in 2008. Chile’s market handset sales are
expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.4% to US$320mn in 2013, as mobile
subscriber penetration reaches 104%. Sales will be increasingly
dominated by the replacement market, with growing demand for mid-tier
models, as well as smartphones and 3G handsets.
