Abstract
Peru’s domestic consumer electronics devices market, defined as
including computing devices; mobile handsets; and video, audio and gaming
products, is projected to be worth around US$1.66bn in 2009. There were
signs of a slowdown in consumer spending from Q408, and the downward pressures
on the Peruvian economy this year look set to be more pronounced than
previously expected. Despite current global economic headwinds, the market
is expected to grow a CAGR of 9.8% to US$2.4bn by 2013, driven by demand
for LCD TV sets, notebook computers, digital cameras and other key
products, and by rising incomes and greater credit availability.
Computers
Computer hardware accounted for around 36% of Peru’s
consumer electronics spending in 2008, with PC penetration still below
20%. BMI forecasts Peru’s market computer sales (including
notebooks and accessories) of approaching US$486mn in 2009, up from
US$442mn in 2008. Computer hardware CAGR for the 2009-2013 period is
forecast at about 9.2%, driven by sales of notebooks and netbooks.
AV Devices
AV devices accounted for around 42% of Peru’s consumer
electronics spending in 2008. Peru’s domestic AV device market
was estimated at US$638mn. Sales of digital TV sets and digital cameras
are projected to drive AV spending growth at a projected CAGR of
nearly 12.7% between 2009 and 2013.
Mobile Handsets
Mobile handset sales accounted for around 22% of Peru’s consumer electronics
spending in 2008. Peru’s market handset sales are expected to
grow at a CAGR of 5.2% to US$448mn in 2013, as mobile subscriber
penetration reaches 93%. Sales will be dominated by the low-tier
segment, but there will be increasing demand for features such as MP3
players and cameras.
