Abstract

Sensors and MEMS, ICs on micro or nano-scale, are a major piece of the overall semiconductor market and widely used in numerous different end segments. This is a growing market, as the processes to make semiconductor technology even smaller and more precise continually improve.

Databeans classifies the sensors market into three primary categories of products: temperature sensors, pressure sensors, and magnetic field sensors. The leading suppliers of sensors include Bosch, Infineon, and Freescale, which all focus heavily on the automotive market, with most revenue coming from actuators and temperature sensors.

Microelectromechanical systems or “MEMS” are sensor, actuator, or structural devices produced on a nano scale. They usually consist of a central unit that processes data, the microprocessor and several components that interact with the outside such as micro sensors. MEMS devices are used in numerous situations including as accelerometers in automobiles, optical switching and alignment in data communications, displays, pressure sensing (including internal blood pressure sensors), actuators (such as MEMS resonators, bio-MEMS, and microphones), and microfluidic. Top MEMS suppliers include Hewlett Packard (market leader for microfluidic MEMS), Texas Instruments, and Robert Bosch.

Total sales of both MEMS and sensors combined will reach $9.2 billion in global 2010 sales and reach 9.2 billion units shipped. Average sales growth of 10 percent annually will cause this market to reach $15.2 billion by 2015.
