Overview
Introduction
A detailed look at the market for bone graft substitutes, bone morphogenic proteins and other biological compounds used in orthopaedic indications. Country coverage is US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK.
DRIVERS AND TRENDS
The introduction of bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) can turn the bone graft market on its head. Though overpriced at present, these products have the potential to eclipse all other products on the market including synthetic substitutes, allografts, demineralized bone matrices (DBMs), and machined bone.

ACTION POINTS
BMPs are more precious than gold (standard) ’Edon’t miss out but know what you’re getting into!
- BMPs are being posited as having the potential to drastically alter the bone substitute market and eclipse all other technologies in this over $700 million arena. Clinical trials data has shown them to be as efficacious as autograft, the gold standard in bone grafting, in certain indications. However, there is still not a great deal of data available conclusively proving their efficacy and their price is prohibitively high in most instances. BMPs certainly have enormous potential but it is not yet clear whether they will meet the great expectations which have been placed upon them.
Boost DBM profits by heavy marketing in Europe and running clinical trials that are product and indication specific
- DBM use in Europe is extremely small. This is not, however, due to lack of desire by European surgeons to use these products as much as it is due to a lack of availability of DBMs in this region. European thought leaders express very positive views regarding the potential of DBMs but have been unable to realize this potential due to marketing barriers. Europe represents a huge untapped potential market for DBMs. These profits can be maximized by investing in clinical trials that are product and indication specific, to ensure that the efficacy of DBMs is presented in an indisputably positive light.
Autologous growth factor (AGF) systems are getting mixed reviews ’Eonly time will tell but the future does not look good
- AGF systems are being marketed as cheap but effective alternatives to BMPs. Although some surgeons believe this, very few feel that these systems have nearly as great a potential as BMPs. Some even feel that their use can harm the patient. The prevailing sentiment regarding AGF systems at the present time is that they are a promising idea that has not yet found its ideal indication.
