Abstract

Introduction

The 2009 Wealth Market Leaders Survey was completed in March 2009 and provides invaluable insights into the Australian wealth management industry. The survey was focussed on HNW characteristics and the operations of the wealth managers that serve these clients.

Scope of this research

  • Datamonitor conducted interviews with 100 wealth managers across Australia, India, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore during March 2009.
  • 17 wealth managers were located in Australia and included a mix of private banks, advisory firms and asset managers.
  • Our Australian sample were a mix of leading local and international wealth providers along with some of the more niche operators.
  • Datamonitor asked a range of qualitative and quantitative questions to wealth managers about their HNW clients and their business operations.

Research and analysis highlights

HNW investors became more defensive in 2009, equities represented a smaller share of their portfolios while cash increased.

Australian HNWs have superior knowledge of products and understanding of market conditions. As such, Australian clients are likely to consider more sophisticated products in the future .

Australian HNWs appear more loyal to their wealth managers as compared to the Asia Pacific average. They are less likely to switch to another wealth manager or leave to manage their own money.

Key reasons to purchase this research

  • Use this primary research to understand the Australian HNW investor better
  • Review which areas most wealth managers will be focussing resources on over the next two years
  • Gain a comprehensive view of your market, and benchmark against your competitors
