- This report examines developments during Q2 2009.
Research and analysis highlights
If 2008 was the year when Europe' s banks lost billions on complex structured
credit assets, so 2009 looks destined to be categorized as the year when banks
suffered substantial losses as borrowers (both individual and business)
struggled to repay loans. In all likelihood, these losses will continue to
mount in 2010
The results of stress tests on retail banks in selected countries (the UK and
Sweden for example) helped reassure investors that institutions are able to
withstand the effects of the economic downturn. However, Eurozone banks remain
untested, which does not bode well for the overall financial stability of the
banking sector in 2009 and beyond.
The outlook for IT spending remains unchanged: carefully targeted investments
will continue to be made.
