Abstract
The touch screen panel industry show good results even though demands for home
electronics including display are radically decreasing due to the global
economic slowdown.
Nisha, the top 1 touch window maker which is employed in mobile phones, from
Japan recorded 20.3% increase in sales in 4Q 2008 compared to 4Q 2007. The
sales of electronics which include mobile phone touch window products
especially recorded 93% increase. Young Fast and J Touch, two of top 5 touch
screen panel makers in Taiwan, also announced their radical increases in sales
in 4Q 2008. Digitech Systems, a leading touch screen panel maker in Korea, is
projected to have large increase in sales in 4Q 2008 compared to 3Q 2008 as
well.
The touch screen panel industry repeatedly achieved quantitative growths to
gradually worsen competitions between leading makers and late entrants.
Moreover, patents regarding the touch screen panel related technology have
great effects on the market. Therefore, Displaybank analyzed the touch panel
related technology patents.
This report studied and analyzed touch screen panel related patents in Korea,
U.S., Japan, and Europe that were issued before June 14, 2008. It sorted 5,584
valid data from a total of 23,569 raw-data.
As a result, there were total of 2,938 patents regarding the touch screen
panel itself which accounted for 52% of the total. Patents regarding parts
accounted for 23% and user interface accounted for 25%.
Apple (It currently draws attentions with a multi-touch related patent.)
conducted active patent activities since early 2000 till the very recent. It
especially showed activeness in add on type touch screen panel and user
interface fields.
