Abstract
Cinemagoing India
Oure latest review of the Indian cinema market takes a sceptical look at some
of the ' statistics' surrounding film production and cinema exhibition,
concluding there is often more hype than substance to India' s entertainment
business story. Nevertheless, a number of small to medium sized exhibitors are
building multiplex circuits, while parts of the country' s traditional cinema
sector are being revitalised by the introduction of low end digital projection
equipment. The other side of the coin, however, the destruction of many
traditional venues by piracy, with a consequent loss of cheap entertainment
for some of India' s masses.
The film production industry, especially Mumbai-based Bollywood, is striving
to adapt to the higher production values expected by an increasingly middle
class and non-resident Indian market but erosion of its mass base leaves a
question mark over its future. At the very least its virtual monopoly of its
domestic market now looks under threat.
