Abstract
Introduction
Despite the robust drug market for immune and infl ammatory diseases and their
high prevalence, diagnostics associated with these diseases do not constitute
a large marketplace. Although researchers are working to discover biomarkers,
associate genes with disease, and develop diagnostics, a healthy commercial
market for diagnostic technologies and biomarker-based products in immune and
infl ammatory therapeutic areas is still years away. The present opportunity
is to identify biomarkers with high levels of sensitivity and specifi city
that can be validated for use in drug or diagnostic development and,
particularly, in disease management to guide and target the use of therapies.
Get the Answers You Need to Shape Your Strategy
- Current ability to diagnose immune/infl ammatory diseases accurately and
quickly is limited. What are the common diagnostic approaches? Which
indications exhibit the highest level of unmet need in terms of diagnostics?
How can diagnostics/biomarker developers tap the opportunities that current
shortcomings present?
- Biomarkers do not currently play a large role in clinical practice, but
their potential utility is apparent. What do thought leaders say about
biomarkers for immune/infl ammatory diseases? How can biomarkers target and
track therapies? What developments of note are under way?
- Large companies are interested in using biomarkers or diagnostics
developed by smaller companies to target patients who are candidates for their
immune/infl ammatory pipeline drugs. What proportion of the companies involved
in these deals are private/venture-backed companies, small-cap companies, or
academic institutions? How many of the 52 companies we analyze relied on
backing from large-cap pharmaceutical companies?
Scope
- Indications: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis
(RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS),
asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and the infl ammatory
bowel diseases (IBDs) Crohn' s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).
- Diagnosis rates: diagnosed prevalence of select immune/infl ammatory
diseases based on Decision Resources' epidemiology.
- Current and future approaches: indication-specifi c modalities,
challenges, opportunities, identifi ed and posited biomarkers, published
research results.
- Dealmaking: Select deals for diagnostics and biomarkers, indication focus
of dealmaking, classifi cations of dealmaking companies.
