Abstract
This Energy Insights report explores some of the many ways
that the increasing number of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)
will affect the utility industry. As they become more prevalent,
PHEVs will impact customer energy use, load shapes, and utility
system operations. If increased electricity usage is not managed through
pricing and grid control, PHEV charging has the potential to
negatively impact system peaks. On the other hand, if managed
appropriately, it can increase off-peak sales and load factors, which
are both beneficial to utilities. In this report, Energy Insights
explores some of the many ways that increasing numbers of
PHEVs will affect the utility industry.
"Industry experts conclude that
the grid will be able to handle large penetrations of
PHEVs without additional capacity if and only if the time
that vehicles charge can be controlled," said Kelly Marrin, senior
research analyst, Load Analysis Strategies.
