Abstract

Takeda is a research-based pharmaceutical company that has been engaged in the pharmaceutical industry for over 220 years. This report provides a full review of the company's activities together with sales forecasts for key products to 2010.

Takeda reported net sales of ¥935,213 million for the nine months ended 31st December 2005, a 7% increase over the previous year's corresponding period, supported by higher sales of in-house ethical drugs. The impact of foreign exchange fluctuations increased revenues by ¥8 billion. Operating income was up by 2% to ¥346,584 million, while net income rose by 14% to ¥281,142 million. Research and development expenditure increased by 36% to ¥116,056 million.

R&D Pipeline Overview

Takeda's pipeline is largely dominated by new indications/ formulations for its core products Actos, Takepron, Blopress and Lupron. Encouragingly for the company many of these developments are either awaiting approval or are in late stage Phase III trials. Takeda has also highlighted three novel candidate drugs as future growth drivers:

  • Rozerem, an in-house developed melatonin MT1/MT2 agonist, was launched in September 2005 and is in Phase III trials in the EU and Japan for insomnia.
  • Lubiprostone has been approved for chronic idiopathic constipation in the US, and has been filed for approval in this indication in Japan.
  • Dimesna, currently in Phase III trials in the US, has been developed by BioNumerik Pharmaceuticals and licensed to Takeda for marketing.
