Anti-Aging Products

US demand to reach $30 billion by 2009

Demand for anti-aging products is expected to reach $30 billion in 2009, propelled by a stream of new and improved products offering health maintenance and appearance enhancing benefits to a largely untapped customer base of middle-aged and elderly consumers. The value of chemicals used to manufacture these products will reach $3.8 billion.

Memory improvement, prostate care, vision care products to post most rapid gains

Astute direct-to-consumer marketing and new, more effective anti-aging pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements will promote annual gains for the large health maintenance segment. Bone and joint care products will continue to dominate the health maintenance segment, spurred by a growing customer base and a plethora of new and improved products expected to soon enter the marketplace. The most rapid gains are projected for memory improvement, vision care and prostate care products. An aging population, as well as heightened consumer awareness of Alzheimer s disease, will drive demand for memory improvement products. However, further advances will be limited by the inability of current medications to cure or reverse lost memory functions.

Demand for vision care products will be propelled by aging baby boomers that are becoming aware of debilitating eye conditions and seeking both preventative measures and ameliorative treatments. Elevated interest and willingness among aging males to maintain their health, the increased understanding of prostate care issues and the introduction of new and improved products will promote demand for prostate care products.

Consumers will continue to increasingly combine the use of both pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements in their pursuit of well being. Pharmaceuticals will achieve the more rapid gains, supported by new product introductions and pricing premiums for patent-protected blockbuster drugs. Although slower, growth in dietary supplements will still be respectable.

Formulated appearance enhancing products to register strong growth

New product introductions and the passage of the relatively affluent baby boomer generation through middle age (when agerelated changes become more apparent) will stimulate demand for formulated appearance antiaging products. Strong growth will arise from various products that reduce the visibility of wrinkles and age spots, such as wrinkle removal injections and age-defying lotions. However, gains will be limited by fierce price competition among the large number of over-thecounter brands continuing to emerge. Hair growth stimulants will also record robust gains.

Chemicals expected to benefit from rapid gains in anti-aging products include memory-enhancing neurological and ophthalmic agents; botulinum toxin for wrinkle-reducing applications; and a host of small volume herbal extracts, including lutein, lycopene and black cohosh, used in both dietary supplements and cosmeceuticals.
