Abstract

Chinese market to rise 12.5% yearly through 2010

Chinese demand for primary and secondary batteries is projected to rise 13 percent annually through 2010 to ¥120 billion. Among the factors driving this growth are strong demand for batterypowered products such as cellular phones and digital cameras, and increasing production of electrical and electronic devices. Market gains will also be supported by an ongoing shift in the product mix toward more expensive batteries (such as lithium-based cells) that deliver enhanced performance for high-drain electronic equipment. Secondary battery market gains will outpace demand for primary batteries through 2010, due in part to strong growth in the use of highdrain portable electronic devices.

Alkaline among the best primary battery prospects

Although zinc-carbon/zinc-chloride batteries are forecasted to dominate primary battery sales in 2010, alkaline batteries will experience the strongest rates of growth, supported by a shift in the primary battery product mix from zinc-based cells toward alkalines. Driving market growth will also be the increasing number of battery-powered portable devices in use and a shift in sales toward more expensive, high-rate alkaline batteries. Primary lithium battery demand will also be strong.

Consumer uses to remain top primary battery segment

Consumer applications will account for over two-thirds of all primary battery sales in 2010. Driving market gains will be such factors as continual improvements in primary battery performance -- allowing them to be employed in a growing array of applications -- and a shift in the product mix toward more powerful, higher-priced batteries (such as alkaline cells and advanced lithium batteries). Market gains for primary batteries will also be supported by rising durable goods production, which will boost demand in the industrial sector.

Li-Ion to outpace other secondary battery types

Supported by rapidly expanding use of high-drain electronic products like wireless phones, notebook computers and digital cameras, Li-Ion batteries experienced a meteoric growth during the 2000 to 2005 period. Looking forward, lithium-based batteries will remain the fastest growing secondary batteries. Helping to boost sales will be the superior performance attributes of these batteries compared to other chemistries, as well as declining prices and continual technological innovations in lithium battery design.

Portable devices the largest, fastest growing secondary market

Demand for secondary batteries used in portable devices is expected to advance the strongest among all secondary battery segments as personal income increases and various high-drain products like digital cameras and advanced cellular phones equipped with such features as Internet access, e-mail, color displays and cameras become more common. Manufacturers have also been reducing the time needed to recharge certain secondary batteries, thereby making the units more appealing to consumers who usually opt for more convenient primary cells.

Study coverage

Details on these and other key findings are available in Batteries in China, a new Freedonia industry study presents historical Chinese demand data for 1995, 2000 and 2005 plus forecasts to 2010 and 2015 by primary and secondary battery product (e.g., zinc-carbon/zinc-chloride, alkaline, leadacid, silver oxide, zinc-air, nickel-metal hydride, nickel-cadmium) and by market. The study also considers market environment trends and indicators, reviews battery technology, presents market share data and profiles 33 leading competitors.
