Abstract

Global demand to approach $40 billion in 2011

Worldwide demand for water treatment products is projected to approach $40 billion by 2011. Although the US will remain the largest water treatment market, developing nations, particularly China and India, are expected to register the fastest growth. Sophisticated water treatment technologies, such as membranes and nonchemical disinfection techniques including UV and ozone, will see above-average growth due to efforts to improve water quality and to reduce the formation of disinfection byproducts. Issues driving the global water treatment industry include:

  • Poor Water Quality - An estimated one billion people do not have access to safe water.
  • Water Shortages - Short term droughts and longer term shifts of population to areas with poor or insufficient water supplies are placing stress on water systems.
  • Inadequate Infrastructure - De-veloping countries cannot keep up with rapid industrialization and urbanization.
  • Long-Term Health and Aesthetic Concerns - Greater concerns regarding the health impact of contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and metals.
