US demand to surpass $3 billion by 2012
US demand for food safety products is projected to surpass $3 billion by 2012.
The adoption of new rules and regulations, such as the mandatory
pasteurization of certain products, will boost demand. Growth will also be
supported by increased awareness of food safety issues and rising consumer
concerns regarding the food supply, particularly following several high
profile foodborne illness outbreaks, nationwide food product recalls and the
discovery of contamination in a variety of imported products, especially from
China. Disinfection products, including disinfectants and sanitizers, as well
as disinfection equipment, will continue to be the largest products consumed
in the food safety market. Other products such as diagnostics, preservatives,
smart labels and tags, software and tracking systems are also utilized at
various links of the food supply chain to ensure food safety and quality. The
biggest market will remain food processing plants, but growth will be strong
in all food safety product outlets, which also include foodservice
establishments; farms; retail, wholesale and distributers; and government.
