Abstract
INTRODUCTION
The Freedonia Group Incorporated is a leading international industry
study/database company. Founded in 1985, Freedonia now publishes over 125
studies each year, covering such areas as building materials, chemicals,
health care, packaging, pharmaceuticals, plastics, security and many other
industries. Studies cover entire industry sectors as well as key niche
markets. Each study includes such valuable intelligence as growth markets and
products, market share, product analyses and forecasts, market analyses and
forecasts, and company profiles. Studies specific to China place the industry
into its international context.
This study analyzes industrial fastener supply and demand in China. The
following types of products are covered: standard and aerospace-grade
externally threaded fasteners (such as bolts and screws), internally threaded
fasteners (such as nuts and threaded inserts) and non-threaded fasteners such
as rivets, washers and pins).
Excluded from the scope of the study are nails, brads, spikes, tacks and
related items, along with adhesives and other joining/bonding products,
although these products are discussed for their potential impact on industrial
fastener demand. Nonindustrial-type products like buttons, paper clips and
zippers are excluded as well. For the purposes of this study, the term
aerospace-grade" refers to a category of high-performance industrial fasteners
manufactured to the specifications of aerospace/defense companies. End-use
applications for these fasteners, however, are not confined to the
aircraft/aerospace industries, but can also include construction,
high-performance automobiles, industrial machinery and various other settings
where the capabilities of such fasteners are warranted. The Special
Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau are excluded from the scope of
this study. Both Hong Kong and Macau remain, to a great extent, economically
independent from the rest of China, even though they returned to the People' s
Republic of China in the late 1990s. Taiwan, which is economically independent
from the rest of China and not under the administration of the central
government, is also excluded from the scope of this study.
Historical data for 1998, 2003 and 2008 and forecasts to 2013 and 2018 are
provided for industrial fastener shipments, imports and exports, in current
yuan (including inflation). Demand for major types of industrial fastener
products and fastener markets are also shown in current yuan. The term
"demand" refers to "apparent consumption" and is defined as production (also
referred to as "output" or "supply") from Chinese industrial fastener
manufacturing facilities plus imports minus exports. The term "demand" is used
interchangeably with the terms "market," "sales" and "consumption." The
renminbi (RMB) is the official currency of the People' s Republic of China, and
the base unit of the renminbi is the yuan. The term "yuan" is used throughout
this report when referring to currency amounts. In addition, major fastener
manufacturers active in China are identified and profiled, and the key
competitive variables are discussed. The entire report is framed within the
Chinese industrial fastener industry' s economic and market environments, and
therefore environmental variables affecting industrial fastener supply and
demand in the country (such as government plans and regulations, inflation and
interest rates, manufacturing value added, population trends, and overall
economic performance) are emphasized. Industrial fastener market share data by
enterprise presented in the "Industry Structure" section is estimated based on
consultations with multiple sources. Tabular details may not always add to
totals due to rounding.
Economic and demographic indicators presented in this study were obtained from
The Freedonia Group Consensus Forecasts dated June 2009. A wide variety of
primary and secondary sources were also used in the compilation of this
report. These include the China General Machinery Components Industry
Association Fastener Branch, the Committee for Screw Threads Standardization
of China, the China National Technical Committee of Fasteners, the China
Astronautics Standards Institute, Chinese government statistical agencies
(principally the National Bureau of Statistics of China), the Ministry of
Commerce, the Ministry of Construction, the Commission of Science Technology
and the Industry for National Defense. In addition, data and background
information were obtained from various news and trade publications, including
ChinaFastener.Biz and ChinaFastener . Corporate annual reports, product
literature and unpublished data obtained through personal contacts were also
used in framing the industry and market environments and as input for market
size assessments.
Statistics from various sources were carefully examined during the preparation
of this study, and contradictions and discrepancies among data sources were
noted. The accuracy and reliability of figures from each source were
evaluated, and adjustments were made where deemed necessary. This was done in
order to arrive at a consistent set of fastener industry statistics, which are
based on the best available information at the time this study was published.
As a result, the data presented here may differ, sometimes substantially, from
figures issued by official governmental sources.
