Abstract
Introduction
The Fuel Cell Today Patent Quarterly Review Quarter 2 2009 covers developments
in fuel cell patents between April 1st and June 30th 2009. The following
analysis contains details of fuel cell patent assignees, technology, region of
assignee and region of publication. It also contains an analysis of the supply
chain based on companies with fuel cell related patents that do not contain
the words fuel cell(s) in the title or abstract. A detailed historical
analysis of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) technology development is also
presented based on historical patent data. This syndicated version of the
report covers patents granted as well as patents applied for, in addition to a
more detailed breakdown of supply chain development and a full analysis of the
historical development of MCFCs based on the patent literature.
Worldwide Patent Applications Q2 2009
The following analysis is based on a search of the Chemical Abstracts database
(ChemAbs, which covers most of the national patent offi ces) for fuel cell(s)
patent applications with a publication date between 1 April and 30 June 2009.
The result of this analysis is 1,715 total patents. Assignees with more than 5
patents this quarter are shown in Table 1. Note that in some cases an assignee
is listed more than once due to diff erences in assignee name. Also, where a
country name appears, it refl ects the unassigned patents that were published
through that national patent offi ce (as not all patent offi ces require an
assignee at application stage). Note that the data in Table 1 represents ' new'
patents, i.e. those that have not been published through another patent offi
ce previously: something that could aff ect the order in which the assignees
appear.
