Abstract
This Government Insights study examines the electronic service delivery (ESD)
market for both central and local governments in France, Germany, Italy, Spain,
and the U.K. Particular attention is paid to governments' interest in the
deployment of interactive services for individuals and businesses and their use
of portals, call centers, kiosks, and electronic ID/citizen smart card systems.
Drivers and inhibitors of future investment are analyzed and a forecast of
total IT spending for ESD by product line (hardware, software, and services) up
to and including 2011 is provided. The study highlights actions for both IT
vendors and governments to consider in order to capitalize on market
developments.
Achievement of better government services is important to the creation of an
inclusive European society and to developing and sustaining a successful
European economy. "It will be increasingly important for governments at all
levels to work together and with ICT suppliers to achieve an interoperable,
secure ESD environment that will serve the needs of Western Europe today and
into the future," said Jan Duffy, research manager, Government and Health
Industry Insights EMEA. "New an innovative funding and delivery models may be
needed to develop the infrastructure needed to satisfy the need to provide
access to all citizens. This is not an insignificant or simple undertaking."
