Abstract
This IDC study presents IDC' s network equipment and set-top box
(STB) capex forecast for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ from
2009 to 2013. It features forecasts for nine APEJ markets
Australia, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, the People' s Republic
of China (PRC), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and the rest
of APEJ (ROAPEJ) (Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia). Fifteen carriers' activities
in the IPTV space are analyzed BSNL, Reliance, China
Netcom, China Telecom, Chungwha Telecom, KT, PCCW, HKBN, PLDT, SingTel,
StarHub, Telekom Malaysia, MiTV, TRUE, and CS LoxInfo.
"The APEJ region
has metropolitan areas that have achieved high household penetration of
broadband Internet and/or cable modem access. These markets are well
positioned for broadcast television but most incumbents will continue to
invest and upgrade their next-generation network (NGN) broadband infrastructure in
order to fully capitalize on the benefits of additional average
revenue per user (ARPU) from IPTV services," says Bill Rojas,
director, Telecommunications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Over the next five years,
the region will see modest-scale IPTV deployments in many metropolitan
areas with high broadband Internet access penetration. In metropolitan areas
where broadband access lags behind, carriers will look at innovative
ways to utilize wireless broadband and satellite broadcasting with IP
multicasting," he adds.
