Abstract
This IDC Industry and Development Models research provides estimates on
the overall power consumption generated by the server installed base
in Western Europe for 2008, as well as forecasts for
20092013. Besides energy consumption data directly associated with servers, estimates
are included for the power needs and costs of the
surrounding datacenter infrastructures in Western Europe.
In 2008, 39.6TWh of electricity
was needed to power datacenters throughout Western Europe, slightly down
compared with 2007. As electricity prices in the eurozone increased,
energy expenses were still on the rise, with 4.9 billion
spent on electricity. "We saw the first positive effects of
a growing focus on energy-efficient components from manufacturers, as new
server generations generally offer lower typical power consumption values compared
with a year ago. This is not yet enough to
neutralize spiraling energy costs, which have to be tackled also
with a correct approach at a facility level and adequate
internal processes within the organizations," said Giorgio Nebuloni, senior research
analyst with IDC European Systems and Infrastructure Solutions.
