Abstract
This study examines the opportunities and challenges for introducing mobile
network cost optimization strategies.
In the main, it assesses the advantages
and disadvantages of initiatives such as network sharing and undertaking
managed network services contracts, as well as optimizing backhaul and
radio interfaces. The report also profiles a number of Western
European MNOs (mobile network operators) by exploring their approaches to
reducing opex (operating expenditures) and to some extent capex (capital
expenditures).
"IDC believes that there is a marked need for larger
and more thorough optimization efforts from MNOs particularly under current
financial and market circumstances. In this, we expect that network
sharing, undertaking managed services contracts, as well as optimizing backhaul
and radio interfaces will continue to hold considerable potential in
delivering opex and to some extent capex savings," said Joao
da Silva, senior research analyst, European Telecoms and Networking.
