Abstract

This IDC study presents IDCs network equipment and set-top box (STB) capital expenditures (capex) forecast for Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ covering the years 2005-2009. Key features include forecasts for eight APEJ markets - Australia, Hong Kong, Philippines, the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Rest of APEJ (India, Thailand, and Malaysia). Fifteen carriers activities in IPTV are analyzed - BSNL, Reliance, China Netcom, China Telecom, Chungwha Telecom, KT, PCCW, HKBN, PLDT, SingTel, StarHub, Telekom Malaysia, MiTV, TRUE, and CS LoxInfo.

"The APEJ region has metropolitan areas that have achieved high household penetration of broadband Internet access and cable TV access. These markets are ripe for broadcast TV over broadband services," state Bill Rojas, contributing analyst, IDC Asia/Pacific, and Sandra Ng, vice president, Communications, Peripherals, and Verticals Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. "Over the next five years, the region will see large-scale IPTV deployments in most metropolitan areas with high broadband internet access penetration. In those metropolitan areas where broadband access is lagging, carriers will look to innovative ways to utilize wireless broadband and satellite broadcasting with IP multicasting."
