Abstract
This document provides insight into the status of the broadband market in
Europe. It analyzes and recommends strategies for the different types of
operators in the Western European broadband market. In addition it quantifies
the competitive situation for Western Europe as a whole and for each country
separately. It includes broadband connection figures by country at the end of
2005. In addition, market shares are calculated on three levels: infrastructure
(by technology), network (by network provider), and retail (by ISP). ISP
subscription numbers and shares for 2004 and 2005 are provided by country.
"Broadband operators are becoming integrated providers of voice, video, and
data services. Increasingly this bundle will also include mobility," said Jan
Hein Bakkers, research manager at IDC. "In this multiplay environment,
competition is not about selling single services, it is about customer
ownership."
