Abstract
This IDC study presents the results and analysis culled from IDC's 2006
Asia/Pacific Online Gaming Survey, 2006 which covered end-user and market
dynamics across six surveyed countries to identify key user trends.
Jun-Fwu Chin, senior analyst, Software, IDC Malaysia, states, "Survey results
show that desktop PCs will continue to be the dominant platform in the gaming
industry as declining hardware and PC costs - brought about by aggressive
offerings from vendors in recent years - have led to the high PC penetration
and year-on-year growth. With regard to demographics, students and gamers less
than 18 years old continue to comprise the APEJ online gaming market. Moreover,
massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs) continue to be the
game genre of choice in the region, followed by casual games. However, we
expect substantial growth in the casual game sector in the near term as
providers look to varying game offerings and avoid any saturation issues within
their existing serious game offerings."
