Abstract

This IDC study provides the updated worldwide forecast for adoption of home networks. The study forecasts the number of households with home networks and breaks out home networks by application type, including PC home networks, multimedia home networks, and entertainment home networks. This study also includes forecasts of unit shipments and revenue of wireless home routers in each region, as well as the growth of the installed base of wireless home networks, broken down by wireless protocol.

Worldwide, the home networking market has made incremental progress, both in terms of increasing adoption of home networks generally and in terms of moving consumers into more intensive home networking applications. Home networking continues to benefit in evolutions of consumer technology adoption on all levels and in all regions, with major drivers of home networking adoption such as broadband subscribership, multi-PC ownership, and consumer laptop sales all increasing at a modest pace.

"Home networking is moving apace in every region worldwide, with the home networking markets in advanced industrial nations predictably further along than those in developing countries. The industry has made and continues to make great strides on all fronts of home networking, particularly in ease of use and ease of installation of basic home networking equipment as well as multimedia networking devices. Integration of online audio and video services will be key to multimedia networking," said Jonathan Gaw, research manager for IDC's Consumer Markets: Home Networking program.
