Abstract
This IDC study looks at the potential of the wireless local loop (WLL)
technology in terms of capability, advantages, and disadvantages as well as
profiles the key players on the services and equipment side in the key markets
where WLL is present - the People' s Republic of China (PRC), India, Malaysia,
and the Philippines.
"The future of WLL looks very healthy in both India and the PRC. In other
markets across Asia, it may not become more than a niche service as WiMAX, both
in its fixed and mobile versions, poses as a possible alternative to WLL with
regard to both voice and data services. WiMAX may emerge as the new type of WLL
of choice in the years to come, particularly in emerging markets such as
Indonesia, the Philippines, and, perhaps, even India and the PRC," says Claus
Mortensen, research manager, Communications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.
