Abstract

This IDC study presents IDC' s Project Skypad, 2007 findings related to key urban Internet trends in nine markets across Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ after interviewing over 4,100 Internet users. Project Skypad aims to investigate the ownership of key IT and consumer electronics (CE) devices, broadband penetration, use of wireless technologies, access to Internet videos, awareness, ownership, and usage of home networking, home automation, and media-centric networks, as well as consumer storage trends.

"The amount of digital content that consumers in APEJ handle at home has been expanding in recent years driven by a variety of factors, including rising broadband subscriptions, rising adoption of IT and CE devices, as well as ownership of home networking equipment and personal storage devices. Survey results show that although currently majority of respondents do not own yet a large multimedia library, nearly 80% of them clearly stated that they expect moderate to strong expansion of their digital content within the next 12 months," says Claudio Checchia, research manager, Consumer Markets Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. "As the amount of digital content in consumers' hard disk drives (HDDs) keeps increasing, the survey shows that consumers proactively protect their digital files often using multiple backup methods."
