Abstract

This IDC study presents a forecast and an analysis of the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ paid music services market. The study includes user and revenue forecasts for IP-based pay-per-download and subscription services. This study covers developments in the paid music services market in six key markets, namely, Australia, India, Korea, the People' s Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, and Taiwan plus the rest of Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or ROAPEJ. It also identifies and discusses factors driving or inhibiting the adoption of these services across APEJ. Moreover, this study describes the current state of the paid online music services market and the trends that have affected it during the past 18 months in the six key markets mentioned as well as ROAPEJ. This study also presents IDC' s updated APEJ paid online music service users/subscribers and revenue forecast for the 2007-2011 period and lists the key forecast assumptions.

"While the paid online music services market in the APEJ region enjoyed growth in 2006 - thanks primarily to Korea, Australia, Taiwan, and New Zealand - the shift to digital music downloads continues to be extremely difficult in all remaining APEJ markets," says Claudio Checchia, research manager, Consumer Markets, IDC Asia/Pacific. "In fact, a closer look would reveal the failure to develop a proper online music market in India and the PRC, where online music services will be relegated to niche offerings at best. The fact that mobile music services continue to enjoy tremendous growth in APEJ only increases the pressure on IP-based music stores," he adds.
