Abstract
This IDC study compares the actual end-user spending and IDC forecasts for SOHO
routers and low-priced UTM security devices. The study attempts to explain the
dynamics that are allowing low-priced UTM security devices to vastly outperform
SOHO routers. It also provides essential guidance for both router and UTM
vendors.
"The question has been, do customers want advanced routing with some basic
security, or do they want robust security with basic routing capabilities?"
said Charles Kolodgy, research director for Secure Content and Threat
Management at IDC. "Based on a comparison of customer spending at the lowest
end of the WAN gateway marketplace, it appears security trumps networking."
