Abstract

This IDC study presents IDC' s mobile equipment capex forecasts for three markets in the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ region - India, Korea, and the People' s Republic of China (PRC) - covering the years 2004-2010. Its key features include detailed capex forecast breakdowns at the country and carrier levels. Six major carriers were studied - Bharti Televentures, BSNL, China Mobile, China Unicom, KTF, and SKT.

"The APEJ region is a world leader in 2G and 3G mobile services, broadband generic DSL (xDSL) access, long-haul optical transport, long-distance VoIP, and limited mobility services. India is still in the period of footprint expansion and with the exception of BSNL, most mobile carriers will concentrate on EDGE for wireless data service offerings through to 2007. The major mobile carriers in the PRC and Korea are now starting to shift their investment focus on high-speed wireless data services utilizing EV-DO, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), and mobile WiMAX technologies," says Bill Rojas, research director, Mobile and Wireless Telecommunications Research, IDC Asia/Pacific. He adds, "Over the next five years, the region will start to witness fixed/mobile convergence (FMC) as integrated carriers seek to capitalize on 2/3G mobile services and xDSL access along with new disruptive technologies such as WiBro. India and the PRC will continue to drive the bulk of fixed-line growth in the region but fixed/wireless substitution has tremendous potential in a number of markets, including Indonesia, the Philippines, the PRC, and India."
