Abstract

This IDC study analyzes the U.S. business mobile market outlook for 2008-2012. It sets the forecast within the context of the overall mobile services market including the consumer market, which is experiencing a steady decline in growth. However, the mobile business segment continues to outpace the rest of the market in terms of subscriber, revenue, and average revenue per user (ARPU) growth. Its strength will largely balance out the slowing of subscriber and revenue growth in the consumer segment throughout the forecast period.

This study discusses key market trends affecting the business market in the United States as well as market challenges and key dynamics to watch in 2008 and beyond. Forecasts for consumer and business subscribers, revenue, and ARPU are also provided.

"The mobile business market has been largely underappreciated over the past couple of years," says Carrie MacGillivray, senior research analyst of Mobile Enterprise Network Services and SMB Markets: Mobility. "2008 will be the year that the enterprise - and the SMB, to some extent - will receive the focus by mobile operators it deserves. These two segments have an increasingly large need for mobile data, whether email or other mobile applications, and this demand for data will drive mobile business revenue and offset the slowing effect in the consumer segment."
