Abstract

This IDC study examines the growing market for PNDs, outdoor fitness, marine, and OEM in-vehicle navigation solutions over the 2008-2012 forecast period. Overall shipments for all four segments will grow to 51.3 million units in 2008 and to 93.2 million units in 2012, representing a CAGR of 20.2% through 2012. PNDs will capture the majority of the consumer navigation device market, with over 75% share for the forecast period.

"As market awareness and the explosive growth for PNDs capture consumer awareness and mindshare for GPS technology, the consumer navigation market continues to expand," said Diana Hwang, research manager for IDC' s Consumer Navigation program. "GPS has and will continue to fundamentally impact the way consumers live and conduct their daily lives, and this trend will continue as standalone dedicated navigation devices morph into more intelligent, connected solutions in the future."
