Abstract

This IDC study provides forecasts for and analyses of the Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) or APEJ mobile service market for 11 countries in the region — Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, the People' s Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Indonesia. This study also provides a review of the mobile service markets in the said countries, SP and competitive performances in 2008, and how subscriber and service trends have evolved. Forecast data is also provided for the total number of mobile subscribers and the mobile penetration rates and the total mobile service revenue segmented by service type — mobile voice and non voice — and by subscription — prepaid and contract.

"Being the two most populous countries in the region means that APEJ will remain the undisputed leader in growth when it comes to mobile services. With the expected launch of 3G (WCDMA) services in the PRC in 2009, another round of shocks will be felt around the mobile market, the economies of scale that the PRC can bring to the cost of equipment will be unheralded. The interesting thing to look out for in the next few years will be how the operator will utilize the ever-increasing speed from the network, 21Mbps in 2008 to 42Mbps, the kind of service that was denied them in the past due to lack of bandwidth," says Alex Chau, senior research manager, Mobile and Wireless Technologies/Services Research, IDC Asia/Pacific.
