Abstract
This IDC research paper evaluates the effects of the introduction
of solid state disks (SSD) as hard disk support for
PCs, standard x86 servers and storage systems. It analyzes the
usage advantages of this technology and presents a brief review
of the system offerings that embed it.
"IDC is observing a
clear trend towards SSD, with a salvo of annoucements in
enterprise products from all major vendors. Prices are still at
a premium compared to hard disk drives (HDD) and the
technology has yet to enter a full maturity phase, yet
the drop in cost-per-Gigabyte in the coming years and the
strong push towards speed and density in all system platforms
will make this component become a cornerstone in hardware design
in the next few years," said Giorgio Nebuloni, research analyst
with IDC European Systems and Infrastructure Solutions.
