Abstract
This IDC study includes a vendor market share analysis on
a worldwide basis for the mobile phone semiconductor industry for
2008. This market grew a meager 1.0% to $23.6 billion
last year as the industry suffered from the continuing global
economic slowdown. Total mobile phone semiconductor revenue for 3.5G grew
at a robust pace, albeit from a relatively small base;
while 2G, 2.5G, and 3G revenues declined. None of the
mobile phone semiconductor devices were spared as the industry experienced
flat to negative growth across all cellular chipsets.
"While the first
half of 2008 showed a continuation of healthy growth in
both units and revenue across all platforms, the industry experienced
an abrupt slowdown in the third quarter and a precipitous
drop-off in the fourth quarter. The abrupt falloff in demand
coincided with the worldwide economic slowdown, which jolted the industry
into action." Flint Pulskamp, program manager, Wireless/Mobile Semiconductors Research
