Abstract
This IDC study provides an overview of the domestic optical
access equipment market including Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GEPON)
systems, very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) systems, and media converters.
Market size and vendor share estimates by equipment segment are
provided for 2008. In addition, market forecasts by equipment category
(optical line terminals [OLTs], optical network units [ONUs], VDSL switches,
VDSL modems, and media converters) are provided up to 2013.
An update of the worldwide access equipment market by geographic
region and product segment is also provided.
"Vendors should anticipate no
growth for the short to medium term and diversify. Both
the GEPON systems and VDSL systems markets are expected to
decline rapidly beginning 2009. In order to enhance their optical
access business, vendors should implement strategies to broaden their product
lineup, expand their sales channel to cultivate new demand, and
actively explore overseas market opportunities. The worldwide market size for
both DSL and fiber to the "x"/passive optical network (FTTx/PON)
systems are expected to grow between 2009 and 2013," says
George Hoffman, group manager, Communications, IDC Japan.
