Abstract
The global WiMAX subscriber base saw further growth in the first quarter of
2009, with the combined number of subscribers in Asia, North and Latin
Americas, and Europe accounting for more than 92% of the overall subscribers
worldwide. It is estimated that the top eight WiMAX carriers worldwide service
around 51.4% of the overall subscriber base. 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz remained the
most prevalent WiMAX spectrums, covering nearly 90% of all WiMAX subscribers.
At present, the number of pre-WiMAX subscribers still surpasses other
technologies; meanwhile, 802.16e subscriber coverage has seen continuous
growth, though. ISPs and WISPs have been the most aggressive WiMAX players in
terms of network deployment and subscriber coverage. Motorola remained the
leading equipment vendor, followed by Alvarion.
