INTRODUCTION
The gift wrap and accessories market is comprised of the products that are used to wrap packages or presents. These include wrapping papers, gift bags, ribbons, and bows, as well as accessories-usually tags or decorative novelties-that are often added to the wrapped package.
PRODUCT DEFINITIONS
Wrapping Paper: Decorative printed paper that is used to wrap the outside of a gift. It can be purchased in rolls of varying lengths, in packages of folded sheets, or in single sheets.
Liner Paper: Lighter-weight paper than gift wrap-usually tissue paper-that can be used to line the insides of gift boxes or gift bags. Because it is softer and more flexible than wrapping paper, liner paper is also good for exterior wrapping of oddly shaped gifts.
Gift Bags: Now a permanent fixture in the gift wrap market, these are basically shopping bags of various sizes that have been decorated. They are made of paper, laminated paper, or plastic. Liner paper is often used inside to increase the "gift-wrapped" effect of presents given in these bags.
Printed Boxes: A minor factor in the gift wrap market, these are cardboard boxes that are printed to make them look gift-wrapped.
Ribbons and Bows: Virtually all gift wrap ribbons and bows are made from man-made materials. (Ribbons made from natural fabrics are costly; therefore, to the extent that they are used at all, they are found primarily in the clothing industry or for use in hair decoration.) Bows are ribbons that have already been shaped into finished bows for the consumer.
Decorative Novelties: These are decorative items made to tie or stick onto gifts that have already been wrapped. They are usually designed to evoke such gift-giving themes as weddings, birthdays, graduations, or baby showers.
MARKET DEFINITIONS
Within the gift wrap market are several important end-use markets. The resale market refers to the gift wrap products available to consumers through retail outlets. These products can be purchased in gift shops, card shops, stationery stores, department stores, mass-merchant outlets, and supermarkets.
The in-store market refers to the gift wrap products sold exclusively to retailers for use on packages that are gift-wrapped for customers in their stores. These products are not intended to be sold directly to consumers.
The fund-raising market consists of gift-wrapping products that are sold through schools, churches, charities, and other nonprofit institutions and organizations as a means of raising money. |
